The resolution outlines efforts to use UN official languages ​​in addition to the six official languages—Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. It is proposed to use these languages ​​when appropriate for communication with specific local target audiences.


The resolution commends the efforts of the UN's Department of Global Communications to highlight some of the most recent important communications by the Secretary-General in official languages, including Portuguese, Hindi, Farsi, Bengali and Urdu, in addition to official languages ​​to promote multilingualism. .


India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador TS Tirumurti, in his address in the hall of the General Assembly, said this year "for the first time Hindi language is mentioned in the resolution".


For the first time, Bengali and Urdu languages ​​have also been mentioned in the resolution, he said. "It is essential that multilingualism is adopted in the United Nations in true spirit and India will support the United Nations in achieving this objective," he said.


Tirumurti emphasized that multilingualism is counted among the core values ​​of the United Nations. He expressed his gratitude to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for prioritizing multilingualism.


He said India has been partnering with the United Nations Department of Global Communications since 2018 and making extra-budgetary contributions for mainstream news and multimedia content in the Hindi language.


Tirumurti said, "As part of these efforts, the project 'Hindi in the United Nations' was launched in 2018 with the aim of increasing the reach of the United Nations in Hindi language and creating greater awareness about global issues among millions of Hindi speakers across the world. To spread."


India contributed $800,000 last month to the United Nations' efforts to continue increasing the use of Hindi.


India's Deputy Permanent Representative R Ravindra handed over the check to Meeta Hosali, Deputy Director and Officer-in-Charge (News and Media Division) in the United Nations Department of Global Communications.


The Indian Mission had said that the Government of India is constantly making efforts to increase the use of Hindi in the United Nations.
